True Blood – The Story of Vampires

Created and produced by Alan Ball’s production company, True Blood has now become premiere television channel network HBO’s most watched drama series since The Sopranos. Showered with accolades and awards, including a Golden Globe and an Emmy, the first season reached a modest viewer ship of 1.44 million per week. The show’s second season that premiered on June 14 2009 made it to an enormous 3.14 million viewers per week. Subsequently, the tenth episode of the second season made a new record of 5.3 million viewers per week. True Blood was renewed for a third season on Dec 3 2009 and is currently heading towards a fourth season.
It is based on the story-line in a series of novels by Charlaine Harris, The Southern Vampire Mysteries. The Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), a waitress at Merlotte’s indulged in paranormal activities, who falls in love with a vampire is centre stage of the show. It narrates the co-existence of humans and vampires in an imaginary town in Louisiana, the Bon Temps characterized by a spooky music by Gary Calamer. Although shot in a fictional town of Louisiana, it is apparent and noteworthy that a number of actors have their origin outside the United States. However, Alan Ball, in an interview claimed that their appearance was undesigned.
True Blood depicts a fictional universe in which the supernatural creatures who come out of the coffin two years prior to the events during the series, are able to integrate themselves into human mainstream as a new form of blood called the “True Blood” invented by the talented scientists in Japan. The protagonist Sookie Stackhouse saves Merlotte’s first vampire customer, Bill Compton when he a local couple of the town to tries to exsanguinate him. The relationship between Sookie and Bill advances into an opportunity to learn more about vampire culture and their physiology. The plot revolves around the mysterious murders of several women linked to Sookie’s brother Jason (Ryan Kwanten), including the sexual partner Maudett Pickens (Daniel Sapia) and Merlotte’s waitress Dawn Green (Lynn Collins). Jason’s best friends stand beside him during the sturm und drang encountered by him when he becomes the prime suspect in the eyes of Detective Andy Bellefleur (Chris Bauer). Another plot revolves around the relationship between Sookie’s best friend Tara Thornton (Rutina Wesley) and Sookie’s admirer Sam Merlotte (Sam Tramell). Inebriated by alcohol, her life moves in an uncontrolled fashion. Jessica Hamby(Deborah Ann Woll), a seventeen year old girl who is forcibly turned into a vampire, is taken in by Bill Compton. Meanwhile, Jason gets addicted to vampire blood. The first season ends with Amy Burley’s murder by Drew and the discovery of a body in the detective’s car.
The second season elaborates on the dispute between vampires and humans. The story revolves around two plots- one focusing the disappearance of vampire Sheriff on Area 9 and the other dealing with the power instilled in Maryann Forrestor to influence humans. The same style of intertwined plot is repeated in the second season with the appearance of new characters.
